Little kids + big rigs = Public Works Day

EUGENE, Ore. - Little kids can climb all over some big trucks Thursday at the City of Eugene's 21st Annual Public Works Day.

From 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 17, over 1,000 kids will climb aboard street sweepers, back hoes and other heavy equipment in addition to learning about traffic safety and the local environment.

"Each year in celebration of Public Works Day, the City of Eugene Public Works Department throws open its doors and invites all community members to come learn more about its services, which include wastewater, engineering, parks and open space, airport, and maintenance," explained Eric Jones with Public Works. "Eugene Police and Fire (and their rigs) will also be special guests at the event."

The open house takes place at 1820 Roosevelt Boulevard in Eugene. It is free and open to all members of the public and all ages.

Solar eclipse Sunday visible from Oregon

Something strange is about to happen to the shadows beneath your feet.

On Sunday, May 20, the Moon will pass in front of the sun, transforming sunbeams across the Pacific side of Earth into fat crescents and thin rings of light.

It's an annular solar eclipse, in which the Moon will cover as much as 94 percent of the sun. Hundreds of millions of people will be able to witness the event. The eclipse zone stretches from southeast Asia across the Pacific Ocean to western parts of North America.

In the United States, the eclipse begins around 5:30 p.m. PDT. For the next two hours, a Moon-shaped portion of the sun will go into hiding. Greatest coverage occurs around 6:30 p.m. PDT. The partial eclipse ends just before 7:30 p.m. >>> Animated Map | Share Your Photos

Because some of the sun is always exposed during the eclipse, ambient daylight won't seem much different than usual.

Allegiant to offer non-stop flight from Eugene to Honolulu

EUGENE, Ore. -- Allegiant Air announced today a nonstop flight from Eugene to Honolulu International Airport, beginning Nov. 17.

To celebrate, the airline is offering an introductory fare to Hawaii, $179 one-way. However, additional fees do apply.

This deal must be purchased by May 21.

Many people say this new flight makes traveling to Hawaii more convenient. "It makes it so much easier. We've always waited for this. We normally from from here to San Francisco and then San Francisco to Honolulu or Kona," said Ken Nagao. Nagao is originally from Hawaii but lives in Eugene.

The new flights will operate once a week between Eugene Airport and Honolulu International Airport.

"We would drive to Portland. It would be a two hour drive, then a five and a half hour flight and then on the return it would be the reverse," said native Hawaiian Erica O'Grady. "I think the direct flights are great."

Eugene Airport director Tim Doll says they're excited for this new flight. "We're anticipating another 20,000 passengers at least each year from this service," he said.
